Earlier today I posted a list of things that I had to do…. Well, they’re all (bar one) done.

Running

I managed a 15 minute run today. I set of from my house and ran to the, nearby, football stadium. Ran all the way around it, and came home. 15 minutes might not sound like a lot, but let me clue you in on some stuff:

  1. My lungs are pretty bad – had really bad Asthma as a child
  2. I’m not, really, that active – being a prototypical computer programmer, and a very lazy one at that, does that kind of thing to you
So I was quite surprised to find out that, according to Google Maps, the run I took this morning was 3/4 of a mile.  have no idea whether this is a good time or not. But it’s certainly better than the time I’d have gotten if I hadn’t gone.

本能 [ほんのう] – Instinct

I can now, sort of, play this song. Learning to play this song (from the official score) had taught me something.

I really hate GOTO statements. Like, really hate them

Most sheet music is quite long, even for a short 4 minute piece like 本能. And the sheet music is usually broken up into repeating parts.

This, kinda makes sense to me. After all, how many songs do you know of that have completely different melodies for each verse? Not many, I’ll wager.

However, 本能 is a difficult song for me to play. Mainly because the score seems to jump about, almost frenetically.

Keep in mind that this is the first song I’ve ever tried to play from the score rather than a list of chords or even tab sheets.

The intro, verses and chorus are easy. It’s the small sections in between them, and the final refrain that seem impossible to me. I’m sure with a few weeks practise I’ll my head around get it, though.

That all being said, I don’t think I did that badly. I picked up the intro first time round (and, subsequently forgot how to play it straight after), the verse and chorus are (pretty much) the same. It’s the ending that I can’t get my head around just yet.

アイデンティティ – Identity

This is a calssic, balls-the-to-the-wall, old school, loud shouty (or in this case screamy) rock song. And I love it.

The songs itself seems really easy to play. Fm > E > A > B… and that’s about all there is to it.

The chorus get’s a little difficult, but I managed to master that – I had to slow all the way down to 1/4 speed just to learn it, though.

It’s the bridge that I can’t play just yet. But, I almost got it on my final try.

In short, 椎名林檎 is a genius.

Translation

It’ll be finished tonight or tomorrow morning. That’s all I’m saying.

Those videos again, in case you missed them
